CNC in action

I was cutting out the hull stands today on the CNC. It does such a nice (and perfectly repeatable) job with amazing speed. You can see in the other photo the way it progressively cuts the material. In the center of the photo is are the beginnings of a small notch called a “tab.” Because the CNC is cutting out both halves of the stand along with the side supports all at the same time from one piece of ply, the tab allows all of the pieces to stay connected as one unit so that the parts do not get mixed up or lost. Once I am ready to make the stand, I simply take a jig saw and cut the tabs, which only takes a couple of seconds.

When I cut out the bulkheads in a couple of weeks, I will take a photo of an entire cutout sheet with the tabs in place and post it. The bulkheads will also get the bulkhead numbers along with the centerlines for each one etched into the surface.
